UN Symphony Orchestra presents a new original musical, El Cóndor Pasa — Andean Hope, a fresh new take on the traditional indigenous story from Peru.

El Cóndor Pasa — Andean Hope is inspired in traditions and lives of Andean regions of South America and reflects on the issues of the South American rural peoples that face the contradictions inherent in internal migration, when the inhabitants of the Andes are attracted by the cosmopolitan influences that come from the cities, and that induce them to leave their place of origin.

In order to capture this ethnic flavour, the ensemble will include guest musicians with indigenous Andean instruments, as well as dancers that will represent mythological dances of the Andes. The musical is resplendent with indelible melodies typical of the Andes of the deep America, and will be showcased by more than 150 performers.

The native instruments and the traditional Andean dances will illustrate the orchestral and choral musical score, presented in a semi-staged concert format by the UNSRC Symphony Orchestra, featuring guest singers, actors, chorus and dancers.

Dante Valdez is a Peruvian composer and conductor with a long and fruitful international career. Trained at the Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad) Conservatory of Music with such legendary teaches as Ilya Musin (whose other students were, Yuri Temirkanov and Valery Gergiev), and Vladislav Uspensky (a student of Shostakovich). As a composer, Valdez is creative and melodic, with skilful and colourful orchestration. As a conductor, he has worked with many renowned world orchestras, from Russia and Bulgaria, to US and Mexico, to Peru.

UNSRC Symphony Orchestra is a community ensemble of the United Nations in New York. Comprising of some 90 amateur and former professional musicians from over 30 countries, the ensemble’s mission is to promote the ideals and goals of the United Nations through music.
